Arsene Wenger major boost for Chelsea
Managing to beat a Chelsea team managed by Jose Mourinho for the first time on Sunday was a major morale booster for Arsene Wenger and his team. The Frenchman had previously failed in 13 encounters to beat Mourinho, but his team secured a 1-0 victory at the new Wembley.
This was the second consecutive Community Shield lifted by Arsenal. This is in addition to the two FA Cup titles that they have won in the last two seasons. These victories have given Arsenal a major boost in terms of confidence according to midfielder Jack Wilshere, who feels that the club can now go on and win the league title.
It has been more than a decade since the gunners last were crowned as the Premier League champions. However, they showed title winning form in the second half of last season. A run of 18 victories from the last 26 league matches meant that Arsenal finished third in the table. For a while, they appeared to have a long shot at the title. This was a tremendous improvement compared to recent seasons when Arsenal have largely been regarded as contenders only for the fourth spot. Wilshere also feels that the addition of Petr Cech is a major step towards the title.
“We didn’t start the season well last year but the way we finished it… if we had played the whole season like that then we could have been champions. If we continue our form from the end of last season when we dominated games with our possession, and we won the ball back in better positions high up the pitch, then we’ve got a real chance. We want to win the league, of course we do. We feel we’ve been together a few years now, we’ve brought in world-class players who have had time to settle,” said Wilshere.
